As private practitioners it is time we amplify our collective voice to retake the narrative and the direction of our profession.
There is a widely promoted narrative in dentistry suggesting that private practice must inevitably give way to large group practices and DSOs. However, a report by the ADA’s chief economist indicates that the majority of new dentists practicing for a DSO intend to transition to an independent practice. Also, when dentists change practices, they are statistically much more likely to gravitate toward smaller rather than larger practices and they expressed higher levels of professional satisfaction after having done so. The ADA report confirms that dentists overwhelmingly preferred private practice regardless of the narrative being promoted by corporate dentistry.
Additionally, the ADA’s health policy institute has reported that nearly 3/4 of dentists are still in private practice and amongst new dentists, those in private practice report the highest levels of satisfaction, across nearly all metrics, when compared with peers affiliated with large group practices and DSOs.
Another recent ADA Health Policy Institute report indicates that dentists who leave a DSO, or other affiliated large group practice, to become independent practitioners, experience the highest increases in satisfaction regarding work-life balance, clinical autonomy, and even earnings. The report uses the term “surprisingly”, to describe these unexpected findings. As independent practitioners, we know this is anything but surprising.
